Opening one of a suit, rule of twenty

Modern practice is to open 5-4 hands with eleven points, particularly if there is a guaranteed honest rebid over a minimum change of suit response, as here.

The auction will proceed smoothly to the heart game.

Post-beginner and above

Opening 1NT, Stayman

If West chooses to pass then East has an easy 1NT opening.  In this simple, almost natural, method West will start by searching for a heart fit, intending to follow a 2 response with a jump to 3 showing invitational values and a five-card spade suit.  North may or may not double to show his club suit, but East will show his hearts and West must then jump to game on his seven-loser hand.

Opening 1NT, Smolen

The sequence in this case does not differ from that above, but the planned continuations are different.

Playing Smolen, if West sees his hand as game-forcing then he can start with 2 intending to rebid 3 over a negative response to show five spades.  If West sees his hand as invitational then the sequence 1NT, 2, 2, 2 shows five spades and invitational values.  Once the heart fit is located these plans becomes irrelevant.

Intermediate and above

Opening 1NT, Quest transfers

The sequence shown does not differ from that above, but the planned continuations are different again.

Playing Quest transfers West will rebid 3 over a negative Stayman response, promising a five-card spade suit with invitational or better values.

Once the heart fit is located these plans becomes irrelevant.

Evaluation

All roads lead to 4.

South will do well not to give away trick on his opening lead, but even with the outstanding major suit honours lying wrong declarer should expect to come to ten tricks, and sometimes eleven.
