Evaluation

In the match ten tricks were made in 2 at both tables, and both Norths were heard muttering about the impossibility of bidding the game on a combined twenty three points.

The truth is that the game contract should be bid in a teams setting, and the key bid is the transfer break.

With the trump king lying right the contract is solid when played by South.

Played by North the contract can go off on a diamond lead, taking the king before the spades can be established for a discard.  If playing the 2NT transfer then any pair with the mechanism to retransfer into the South hand will have an advantage.

Opening 1NT, transfers, transfer break

The 1NT opening and 2 transfer should be routine.

South will break the transfer with four-card support, and, at teams, North should raise to the game on his seven-loser hand.

Opening 1NT, transfers, the 2NT transfer break

The 1NT opening and 2 transfer should be routine.

2NT by South shows four-card support in a game-going hand with a weak doubleton.  With no interest in no trumps North jumps to the suit game.
