Two-under transfers

An immediate response of 4 is a transfer to clubs and an immediate response of 4 is a transfer to diamonds.

In some ways this is no more than an extension ‘South African Texas Transfers’.  In each case the bid sets the suit on a single-suited hand, and might pave the way for a slam investigation.

In response, opener’s step one bid can be played as RKCB.

This convention can be incorporated in a number of ways.

One fairly straightforward possibility is:-

3  Puppet Stayman;

3  transfer to hearts;

3  transfer to spades;

3  puppet to 3NT;

3NT two-suited in the minors;

4  setting the suit as hearts;

4  setting the suit as spades;

4  setting the suit as clubs;

4  setting the suit as diamonds;

4NT quantitative;

5  natural - no slam interest;

5  natural - no slam interest.

Clearly there are some options here in respect of which sequences show a slam-try or no slam interest, and there are choices to be made regarding 3 and 3NT, but there are sufficient sequences available to say everything you want to say about hands which are single- or two-suited in the minors.

I have never played this convention with a regular partner, but it has a delightful consistency about it which appeals to me.

My suggestion is that it is at the very least ‘well worth a try’.
