Indicating a lead

Whether or not you are likely to be on lead initially you can hardly blame partner if he leads your suit when he gets the opportunity.

For this reason you should be far more prepared to intervene in a suit headed by good honours than in a suit headed by not very much. This policy will also increase the likelihood that you take at least a modicum of tricks if you find yourself heavily outgunned, and possibly doubled for penalties.

This principle is particularly important when you find yourself in the advancer’s seat facing partner’s overcall.

Nothing wrong with this spade suit.

You will be happy to call 1 over any lesser opening by your opponents.

Do you really want partner to lead a spade?

You will leave your opponents to get on with it more often not.
