The good weak two

An interesting variation on the standard single-suited weak two.

In principle it will show a six-card suit usually on a range of nine to twelve but can be as high as ten to fourteen.

The considerations relating to length and strength as discussed under ‘weak bids/expert style’ might still apply.

Clearly there is a little more defence in such a hand and so your opponents will have to tread that little bit more warily.

There is certainly much to be said for playing it in hearts rather than its weaker little brother.

Such a bid frequently replaces a standard weak two when opening in fourth seat when the bid has no preemptive value - clearly the bid is made with every intention of obtaining a positive score.

A relatively simple variation which can be encountered at the very highest level combines ‘good weak twos’ in both majors, with the weaker versions being included in the multi 2 opening.
