Opening 1NT, Asptro

East’s overcall promises at least four spades and another five-card suit.  North was planning to transfer into spades but now passes.  West’s pass is unusual, but must be correct.  North can now pass, but double shows hearts and clubs.  I would raise, as shown on this East hand, but pass is not unreasonable after which South will choose 3.

Opening 1NT, Landy

East’s overcall promises 5-4 in the majors.

West can do no more than ask for the longer major, and then prefer the 5-1 to the 4-2 fit.

Evaluation

The most common contract was 3 by NS, going one off and giving EW a score of 67%.

Following the Asptro sequence, a raise by East to 3 will make more often than not on the cross-ruff to give EW an excellent score.

If EW find themselves in a heart contract they will come away with six tricks for a poor score, and finally South should make eight or nine tricks in spades if he gets all his finesses right.

Overall, it pays for EW to compete, provided that they can avoid landing in a heart contract.

The winners on the day are Asptro and Cappelletti, but it might have been very different if West had held a string of clubs rather than a string of diamonds.

Opening 1NT, Transfer overcalls

East has a choice as he evaluates the strength of his hand.

If he feels good enough to compete at the three-level then he should start with 2, transferring to spades and then rebid 3 thereby showing his precise 5-4 shape.  There the auction should end.  More likely at this vulnerability is a transfer to hearts as shown, and South’s competitive bid at the two-level will end the auction.

Opening 1NT, Cappelletti

East’s overcall promises 5-4 in the majors.

This won’t happen with any great frequency, but a pass by West looks like by far the best option.
