Evaluation

An opening bid of 1 is likely to leave you playing in 2 on that miserable suit, and an opening bid of 1 leaves you with an impossible rebid problem, so the choice for me lies between pass and 1NT.

What happens?

Both 1NT and 2 make exactly.

Those who opened one of a minor were saved to an extent when EW competed to 2 going one off.

There is nothing in it at teams scoring.

At pairs those who open 1NT and transfer into hearts are the winners on the day.

Opening 1NT, transfers

I have chosen to open 1NT on this North hand rather than 1 or pass (see below).

Some Souths will pass on this 5-3-3-2 hand, but a transfer into the five-card major is almost universal these days - and that will end the auction.
