Opponents opened one of a suit

It goes more or less without saying that this is the bread and butter situation of competitive bidding.

There are all sorts of approaches.

The important thing is that you and your partner are agreed on what you promise when you raise his suit, and also on what you promise when you introduce a new suit.

partner made a minimum suit overcall

partner made a weak jump overcall

partner made a two-suited overcall

partner bid in the protective seat
