RHO overcalled in a suit

There is a real possibility in this situation that you might find yourself in no man’s land.

The deal may belong to your side or it may belong to the opposition - responder may or may not have promised either strength or weakness - and you must make a decision as to whether to be constructive or obstructive.

There is certainly something to be said for adopting

a uniform approach

However, you will frequently be able to determine whether or not responder holds values, and when this is the case I prefer to tailor my methods, at least to an extent, to the specific situation.

responder made a weak bid

or

responder showed values.

It goes without saying that you will need a partnership agreement as to the meanings of your bids when responder’s offering is indeterminate.

Having decided on your broad approach as above you will then be in a position to assign meanings to each of the available bids.

These are considered separately as follows:-

raising partner’s suit

opponents’ suit at the lowest level

jump in opponents’ suit

double

new suit at the lowest level

jump in a new suit

1NT

2NT

Whatever your choices in each of these categories you may wish to combine them with either or both of

the good-bad 2NT

transfer advances.
